Visiting the Biennale Arte 2024

Visiting the Biennale Arte 2024

March 2024

The 60th International Art Exhibition, curated by Adriano Pedrosa and produced by the Venice Biennale, is opening to the public from Saturday 20 April to Sunday 24 November 2024 at the historic venues of the event: the Giardini and the Arsenale.

The pre-opening is planned for 17, 18 and 19 April, while the awards and inauguration ceremony will take place on 20 April 2024.

Biennale Arte 2024: Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere

This year the title of the event will be Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere. With 332 artists and 90 countries on display, plus 30 collateral events, the next edition will put the spotlight on diversity, examining the processes and behaviors that lead to defining others as “foreigners”.

Quoting the curator Adriano Pedrosa «The expression Stranieri Ovunque has several meanings. First of all, that wherever you go and wherever you are you will always encounter foreigners— they/we are everywhere. Secondly, that no matter where you find yourself, you are always truly, and deep down inside, a foreigner.».

More specifically, the title originates from a series of works created starting from 2004 by the Claire Fontaine collective, born in Paris and based in Palermo. The works consist of neon sculptures bearing the words “Stranieri Ovunque” in various colors and in different languages. The expression was in turn taken from the homonymous name of a Turin collective that fought against racism and xenophobia in Italy in the early 2000s.

Contemporary and Historical Nuclei

For the first time the exhibition has been divided into two nuclei, the contemporary one and the historical one. The first will be closely connected to the title of the event and will host the works dedicated to the different meanings of the term “foreigner”, which is in many languages etymologically associated with the word “strange”.

The Contemporary Nucleus will therefore focus on the production of queer artists, outsider artists and indigenous artists, and will develop between the Central Pavilion and the Corderie.

The Historical Nucleus, on the other hand, will display works from different regions of Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Arab world dating back to the 20th century. It will develop over three rooms of the Central Pavilion: the room dedicated to portraits, the one dedicated to abstractions and a third one dedicated to the Italian artistic diaspora in the world.

Collateral Events

As per tradition the Collateral Events will also offer great cultural excitement and interest throughout the duration of the Exhibition. The Collateral Events, promoted by national and international non-profit organizations and institutions, are organized in numerous points and locations in the city of Venice. These events propose a series of projects from many parts of the world and enrich the International Exhibitions of the Venice Biennale.
